We had the most epic adventure with @coralcatsfiji ! A day trip from Viti Levu to the surf breaks out in the Mamanuca Islands 🌊 Did you know that you can access these breaks from Viti Levu? 🤫 It’s a long day but 10/10 recommend! Our captain was fantastic. He even went diving with us and helped the girls find a seahorse 🩵 The water at #swimmingpools is crystal clear and the reef around the sandbar is the best snorkeling we’ve ever done. Fiji is the soft coral capital of the world and the array and colors of the abundant marine life is breathtaking. Isla got in and immediately pulled her face out of the water to tell me, “Mom, it’s SO PRETTY!!!” We loved it so much that we made another trip out to the Mamanucas to spend a couple nights {follow for upcoming post on where we stayed} But this day trip was necessary to try to catch the end of a bomber swell last March. @surfline can tag ‘em if they know ‘em.

What a day!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sandy Bay, New Zealand 🤫 Sometimes you find a place so magical and undiscovered by the rest of the world, you really have to contemplate sharing. Sandy Bay is one of those spots. I’m sharing with the ask that you respect that this is a long-loved local surf break and you bring nothing but aloha 🌺

Located on the Tutukaka Coast, this bay offers waves for every ability level. @tutukakasurf offers lessons and rentals and has a shop about 15 minutes away at the marina (with a fun tire swing out front) with all sorts of unique items, locally made. The “window surfer” finger surfboard was designed by a local high school student! Hopefully, @tutukakasurf can link it in the comments. We also discovered @surfpaints at the shop! If you’re looking for a way to paint your board or let your kids draw on it or footprint it like @kellyslater recently did for Father’s Day, these paint pens are perfect!

The sunrises were breathtaking and it always feels more profound when you are one of the first people in the world starting a new day. 🌅 From sunset to sunrise, this beach is great for families, and if you want to stay overnight, there are reservable RV spots as well.

Rainbow Falls, North Island, New Zealand 🌈 This was a wonderful surprise stop as we had no idea there was a beautiful hiking trail behind the falls. If you #googlemap or @alltrails it, you will see that it goes quite a distance. If we had known, we would have planned for a more extensive hike paired with a waterfall swim.

Still, the forest bathing was no less than New Zealand quality, a bar hard to beat. We soaked in all the solitude and greenery along the gentle stream with the children giggling and skipping through sunlight flittering through the trees and ferns.

Waianiwaniwa / Rainbow Falls stands 25m and has opportunities for rock jumping, kayaking, swimming or picnicking for the day. You will see signs to stay on trail as kiwis nest off-trail. (As they are nocturnal, you won’t see them during the day but we do know where a sure place to see a kiwi is with the kids, stay tuned for a future post!) If I were to go back to Rainbow Falls, I’d plan a half or whole day at this site. Parking is easy and the hike down to the falls is kid-friendly. Comment or message for more questions!

Don’t miss a stop at @makanaconfections Boutique Chocolate Factory before or after your visit to the falls. Located nearby in Kerikeri, you can watch the chocolates being made and sample some options to bring home. Good luck deciding and getting them to last the car ride!

Elora (11 y/o) first scuba dive! 🤿 Elora has been snorkeling since she was a toddler but she finally got to experience the feeling of flying under the sea thanks to @paditv and @musketcove_fiji 🌴🐠🪸 As a mom, this was one of the best days of my life. I was just SO happy for her and diving alongside her, 40 feet below the surface, I was just amazed and in awe of her determination, courage, and calm composure.

It was fitting that on the way down the rope, something jarring happened. A few feet down, Elora gave us the thumbs up to resurface. I was sure she was second guessing her decision to dive and her nerves got the best of her. When we reached the surface with her instructor, she removed her regulator and blood came pouring out of her mouth. I immediately suggested we get back to the boat when Elora interrupted me, exclaiming, “my tooth is coming out!”

The regulator had loosened her last adult tooth. It was hanging by a thread. “Let’s head back to the boat and take care of it and get you cleaned up,” I pleaded.

“No, mom, I’m doing this dive,” she insisted. And she grabbed the tooth, pulled it out and chucked it to the bottom of the sea floor. After spitting out a couple mouthfuls of blood and rinsing with ocean water, she said, “let’s go” and placed her regulator back in her mouth, full of only adult teeth. Her last baby tooth, somewhere on the sea floor, amidst the mountains of coral she was about to discover.

The water was a little churned up that day from a system @surfline had been covering at #cloudbreak the previous day, but the coral mountains were still stunning and the reef fish abundant. Elora remembered all her dive signs and was a pro at reading her gauge.

When we resurfaced and got back to the boat, her eyes were twinkling and she said, “I just can’t see anything the same anymore! This is a whole new world!! This was the most incredible thing I’ve ever done and I just see the entire world so differently now. Nothing is the same anymore!”

My baby was entering adulthood, her preteen years, with the understanding that the 🌎 is not as it seems on the surface. There is so much to learn, discover, and appreciate. Her life forever changed 💓

Maitai Bay, New Zealand ~ If you’re looking for a pristine beach, all to yourself, with soft white sand and crystal clear sea water in all the shades of greens and blues, visit Maitai on the Kari Kari peninsula during the shoulder season. The quiet lapping of the waves and the energy of the landscape’s beauty is sure to inspire creatives to enjoy writing, drawing, and painting. Elora immediately grabbed her sketchbook while Dad, Linnea, and Isla played in the sand, building a sailboat from beach finds. There are tide pools off to the right for snorkeling and beach combing and hiking trails along the coast. If you are driving NZ in an RV (highly recommend, contact for reasons why!) there is a gorgeous, convenient site to camp at the top of the bluff. If you’re thinking of taking the plunge into this crystal clear clove, save this post or send to a travel buddy. It’s a North Island site not to be missed! 🇳🇿

4th of July in Hawaii 🌺

Celebrated with a flower drop in lieu of fireworks thanks to @outriggerresorts and @bluehawaiianhelicopters 🌸🌼🌸🌼 The keiki made leis from all the falling flowers they ran to collect from the helicopter overhead as glittering curtains of orchids and plumerias danced their way down from the sky amidst the swaying palms, lining Kaanapali Beach. We ended the day with a classic family dinner at @dukesmaui while enjoying a gorgeous sunset and live music, filled with gratitude. 🌴

Happy Easter! 🐰🌷We had so much fun visiting @sealifesydneyaquarium! The shark tunnel is fantastic with manta rays, turtles, and large fish passing overhead and by your sides! We also enjoyed the hilarious penguins and saw dugongs for the first time in “real life” 🥰 They also have a beautiful Great Barrier Reef exhibit, which was fun to see after diving there the week prior. I asked the girls to recall one quick fact each from their visit:

Elora: I learned that the Australian Lung Fish is as old as the dinosaurs. It’s been around for at least 380 million years.

Linnea: I learned that the dugong is a cousin of a manatee but looks different.

Isla: I learned that I can touch a sea cucumber without it poisoning me.

Shhhhh….This is Whale Bay, New Zealand 🐋

So many travel planners urge you to visit the South Island, which is spectacular, but don’t sleep on the North Island!! On the Tutukaka coast, you will find this incredibly breathtaking gold sand, clear water, quiet beach. The family-friendly hike down to the beach is shaded and beautiful. Just watch toddlers along the side as there are some significant drops. The horseshoe shaped beach is a crystal-clear turquoise and blue cove where your family can enjoy relaxing, reading, snorkeling, and a picnic. 🧺 📚🤿🌞⛵️

The name Whale Bay comes from the days of Māori whaling culture as boats would launch from this protected cove. ⚓️

HAPPY 10TH BDAY, LINNEA! 🐨 An incredible wish come true for this birthday girl! 🎂 Ever since working on a school project at @stmichaelscountryday Linnea has dreamed of visiting Australia! 🦘 Her wish came true and she saw wild eastern gray kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, macaws, lorakeets, and crocs! 🐊 To top off her Australian bday, she got to celebrate her American birthday, thanks to the international date line, with her mom! Born a day before me, we celebrated our joint bday (her American and my Australian) by snorkeling together on the Great Barrier Reef. 🪸🥹 We found nemo, a moray eel, giant clams, bumphead parrotfish, blacktip reef sharks, unicorn fish, just to name a few! A beautiful, easy access waterfall in the Whangarei area. We briefly stopped at these 26m falls en route from Auckland to the Tutukaka coast but it would also make a lovely half day stop for a picnic and swim. Many local kids were playing in the stream and enjoying a rope swing while parents talked story over a picnic lunch. The trails were shaded, lush, and magical, like every forest we encountered in New Zealand! ✨

@natgeo ranked the The Poor Knights / Tawhiti Rahi the most incredible scuba diving site in the world. Located off the Tutukaka coast of New Zealand, this marine reserve is an experience you do not want to miss. Our girls were so excited for this trip! 🤿 We snorkeled and kayaked, exploring sea caves, walls, and arches. Below the surface, we encountered a variety of subtropical species and were blown away by the clarity of the water. Another highlight of the trip was encountering an oceanic manta on the way back to port. The size of this majestic creature was jaw-dropping. We have snorkeled with coastal mantas in Hawaii but the oceanic manta must have been double the size! Its wingspan appeared to be at least 20 feet! Whether you choose to dive this site, snorkel or kayak, reach out to @divetutukaka ! We recommend going as a family during New Zealand’s summer for the water and air temps to be warm for the kids.

Kia ora! There are more sheep than people in New Zealand, so we spent our first day sheep farming!! 🐑🐑🐑 As one of the world’s largest exporter’s of wool, it is the perfect place to learn about herding, shearing, and sheep! @sheepworldfarmpark is a small sheep farm owned by @springboard_nz , a not-for-profit organization helping local at-risk youths. Sheep World acts as their primary alternative educational center, providing real world training opportunities for youths in need. From their website, you can reserve a spot at their shearing show or to just visit the animals and enjoy a short self-guided kid-friendly ecology hike/tramp. ALL of their profits go to the incredible Springboard organization. The girls loved the shearing show, which includes a herding demonstration and oodles of information on sheep farming and its history. When the show wrapped, the kids enjoyed bottle feeding baby alpacas and visiting with piglets, goats, mini horses, and more! We HIGHLY recommend this stop, about an hour and a half north of Auckland. If you are driving to the Tutukaka Coast or the Bay of Islands, it’s a great spot to stretch your legs and learn about sheep farming for a good cause. We spent about two hours at the farm. They have a cafe for lunch, coffee, and real fruit ice cream cones. 🍦Save this post in your North Island New Zealand travel ideas! An evening (4pm-9pm) at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 🌋 to explore the Nahuka lava tube, steam vents, and bubbling cauldron of Kilauea in between episode 11 and 12 of the 2024/2025 eruption. 🔥 Pele had set the fountains aglow at 8pm the night prior until 7am the day we arrived. Witnessing a volcano so close to an active eruption was one of the most fascinating, humbling, spiritual experiences we’ve experienced. Walking through the lava tube, Nahuka, the thriving rainforests and the fields of steam vents was grounding and inspiring for us all. The energy of this place is beautiful and intense. We are so grateful to Pele for welcoming us to her home. We ended the evening at the Volcano House Restaurant, waiting to see if any further fountaining would occur. As you will see at the end of the reel, the restaurant (also a hotel) offers a fantastic view. It’s further away but can still be easily seen.

📝 Travel Tips

Visit the park in the evening, it’s magical. Allow enough daylight hours to hike. You could spend multiple days at the park, check out their trail maps. Multiple lodging options avail.

There are two restaurants at The Volcano House. The casual option takes walk-ins and is kid-friendly, but prepare for a wait.

Kilauea has now completed episode 13 and is predicted to continue her pattern of erupting within the week. Likely within the next couple of days for episode 14.

Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts to avoid “Pele Hair”, volcanic glass, which can be present during eruptions.

📚Homeschool / Worldschool Tips

Lei and the Fire Goddess is an excellent read for grades 2-6 by a local Hawaiian author. Recommend before visiting.

Utilize all the resources on the national park website. We love @blossomandroot for science and, of course, the local library.

Akaka Falls on the Big Island of Hawaii is a spectacular site, flowing 442 feet into a lush, green steam-eroded gorge. The walk to the falls is a short .4 miles and easy to do with even the youngest of kids. Park entry is free for state residents (with ID) and $5 per person above the age of 3 and the only form of payment accepted is credit card. Parking is also via credit card ($10) but free for state residents. After your trip to visit Akaka Falls, don’t forget to stop at Ed’s bakery for a cinnamon roll or tasty treat and say hello to Mr. Ed! ⛴️ Hop on an early morning ferry from Charlotte Amalie (West Side of STT) or Red Hook (East Side of STT) If you have a car on STT, use the car ferry. The fare includes all passengers in the vehicle!

🚙 Arrive to Cruz Bay, STJ, and pick up a rental car if you are more than two ppl. Taxis charge per person and can get very expensive with a family!

🏝️ Head to beautiful Maho Bay for a swim and early lunch. Bring your own picnic or order from one of the delicous food vendors! SUP rentals, beach chairs, and floats are also available for rental / hire.

🤿 Drive to Annaberg Plantation. Park in the lot and take the trail to the left of the plantation entrance. Follow along the shore to reach the best snorkeling on St John at Waterlemon Cay! *The trail requires shoes

🐢 Reach the beach area and snorkel the healthy, thriving grass beds with dozens of sea turtles!

🐠 Continue walking out to the point. You will see a marked swim area for snorkelers to swim across to the small island, Waterlemon Cay. Snorkel around the island in either direction and see a variety of hard and soft corals, reef fish, nurse sharks, rays, sea stars, urchins, anemones and more! *Bring flotation devices and dive flags if possible. Current can be strong. Always check conditions and snorkel with a buddy.

🌅 Return the rental car and enjoy a sunset dinner in Cruz Bay before boarding an evening ferry ride back to STT! *The evening ferry rides are a vibe with music and island lights aglow. If you are taking the car ferry, the last one departs at 5pm so plan on dinner back on STT.

We want everyone to be able to experience the pristine, preserved Norman Island, the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Treasure Island. 🏴‍☠️ Visit the website for The Pirates Bite (link in bio) to see the customer ferry schedule. Arrive at Hannah Bay 30 minutes prior to departure time and purchase your roundtrip tickets at the dock office. The tickets, priced at $20 per adult RT and $10 / child RT, include a free fruit punch upon arrival. 🍹 Plan to have lunch at the restaurant and enjoy service on the beach chairs under an umbrella, a cabana or inside the open air patio. The vast majority of visitors will be arriving via private charter. We have done this option as well, but you don’t get to spend a full day on Norman Island. And the cost is exorbitantly more! Spending a full day on Norman, you can hike to beautiful vistas, snorkel with sea turtles on the grass beds, visit the coral reef along the rocks, spotting lobsters, reef fish, and sometimes a reef shark! 🐟🐠🐡🐢🦈🦞 There’s also a shop, a volleyball court, and more! 🛍️🏐🤿

The island is owned and maintained by conservationist, Dr Jareki, who also owns the gorgeous, unspoiled @guanaisland. His efforts to keep the natural beauty of these islands is apparent on land and in the sea. Every time we return to Norman, we find more sea life. And on our most recent visit, the water was the clearest we have ever seen.

I was hesitant to share this tip because we’ve enjoyed this hack over the years and don’t want it to become abused by travelers. Please respect the fact that this is also the mode of transportation for employees so be on time for departures, respect the captains, and offer gratuity if you wish. And most importantly, leave no trace! Keep the BVI beaches clean for generations to come 💙🌴🐚
